Thought for the week 18-09-23
Lamentations 3:22-23 The steadfast love of the LORD never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.
I really enjoy my job, I love the variety of it – one minute I’m in a school talking about church school ethos and the next I’m training first year curates, with lots of other things in between. I’ve never been very good at just doing one job or having one focus, I easily get bored and like moving from one type of task to another. That does not mean however I don’t get that Sunday night feeling, I don’t dread work but I enjoy the freedom my weekends bring to get things done, to catch up with friends and family and choose how I spend my time.
I was thinking about this on a drive home from being at my parents Sunday afternoon, thinking about having to get up early and switch my brain much more quickly that I would do at the weekend. As a drove the old hymn Great is Thy Faithfulness came to mind and in particularly the chorus:
Great is Thy faithfulness Great is Thy faithfulness Morning by morning new mercies I see All I have needed Thy hand hath provided Great is Thy faithfulness, Lord, unto me
The bit that struck me at first was the new mercies, each day it is an opportunity for God to show me new mercies, new ways he wants to bless me, new ways he wants to use me. When I wake up in the morning I can be expectant about what those new mercies are. As I continued along these thoughts it made me think that every day there is something that I might do or say that may seem quite normal to me but actually helps someone, or affects someone is a positive way - even when I don’t really realise it. This is not to blow my own trumpet and say what I say is of upmost importance but just that I believe as individuals we can make a difference to those around us.
I then thought about the line ‘all I have need thy hand hath provided’. However, I feel on a Sunday night, or any other time in the week God will provide everything I need. Does it mean those Sunday night feelings will disappear? Probably not but it gives me purpose and positive expectations for each day.
