Get Involved - become a Foundation Governor
The role of a Foundation Governor provides many opportunities to support the amazing work of our schools, as they serve local children and families of all faiths and different worldviews.
Foundation Governors play an important role in:
- supporting the headteacher
- setting the strategic direction of the school
- developing and securing the Christian Distinctiveness of a school
- acting as a link between the school, the church and the community.
It is important that foundation governors in our Diocese are representative of everyone who lives in our local communities, so we appoint people from a variety of backgrounds and lived experiences.
The Board of Education is always interested in hearing from people who feel called to support schools in this way.
Please get in touch with us if you would like to find out more.

Foundation governors are vital to the ongoing health and well-being of our church schools through their role:
- providing strong, sustainable links to the wider community,
- rooting the school as part of the Diocesan family
- assisting the school to build around key Christian values
- developing a distinct Christian Vision so that the school can nurture all children
- ensuring that Religious Education is at the heart of the curriculum and is a core subject
Foundation governors must be willing to represent the interests of the Anglican church.
Together with the senior leadership of the school, governors ensure that the highest quality of education is provided for pupils, enabling them to be successful adults of tomorrow. As a foundation governor, you will have the opportunity to make a positive difference to the educational experiences and outcomes of children and young people.
If you have the time, skills, and a willingness to support the school's Christian ethos, please consider becoming a Foundation Governor.
